That's actually what made me realize this problem existed. As you say, I have had to temporarily turn on DHCP on the gateway just so I can get connected and turn everything back on. Somehow I messed this up evidently so that there is an "external IP", and that is the one that I obviously cannot reach remotely. The 192.168.0.4 address should always be available when you restart assuming you have it set to static. You shouldn't need the 2nd adapter to connect to your host. I'm not sure what you mean by losing connectivity after you restart. Your 2nd virtual switch is the Internal one. One is external, and hopefully this is where your VMs are connected and you are allowing the hypervisor to use this NIC as well. So, all of that to say, it appears you have a couple of virtual switches. This physical NIC is still used by the hypervisor (if the checkbox that allows the hosting OS to use that connection is enabled), but it also allows the VMs hosted on the hypervisor to communicate with network devices beyond the hypervisor itself when that port is connected to a physical switch, for example. In other words, there's no physical port to connect a physical Cat cable to in order to connect the hypervisor to a physical switch and beyond.Įxternal virtual switches allow the same level of inter-device connectivity between VMs and the hypervisor as internal switches do, but in this kind of virtual switch, one of the hypervisor's physical NICs is bound to a virtual switch.
